Once you have a home inventory list it might as well go to work for you!

Over the past couple of years I find myself using the internet for work and play to the point it has become part of my lifestyle. To compliment that, I recently started using Springpad as my online organizational tool.

Here is my short synopsis if you are not familiar with it.

Springpad is a website designed to store and organize almost any digital information that you need for future reference. I have found the format to very easy to get into. The only service I have to compare it to is Evernote. My description for Springpad fits Evernote also but there are two differences that made me choose Springpad

  • Evernote limits the amount of storage space and features in the free version. Springpad does not, it is free.
  • Springpad has a growing collection of apps and tools that make it useful for a variety of functions (ie meal planning, task management, blog posting…). If Evernote can do the same things it is not apparent or as convenient.

In Evernote’s defense I will mention a plus that they have over Springpad. That is their free desktop software that allows you to access your information offline. That might be a major consideration for those who don’t have consistent internet access. There is a link at the end of this post where you can get more information.

One of Springpad’s many applications is for creating a home inventory list. There are many options available for doing that but what I found is having all of my relevant information in the same spot adds to its power. There is the obvious benefit of recording  all your stuff so it could be replaced after a loss. That said my first thought when I saw the app was how easy it would be to link a task to a product in my home inventory.

For example, I needed to replace the burners in our barbecue grill this spring. With Spring pad I would add the note to my task list and link to the grill in my home inventory list.  When I call the store or go online to order the parts they will ask for the make and model of my grill.  As pay off for, my due diligence in, creating my home  inventory list in the same place, I can give that information to them with no hassles. Using the mobile internet application for your phone you are hot on the spot.  Once you have the data collected and stored it might as well go to work for you!

We will talk more about creating a home inventory list and how that data can be utilized, in future post. For now click on this link and explore Springpad.

I am eager to find out what you think and if it works for you too!

Someone said “information is power”.

That may seem very broad and general but with small steps, one at a time, together, we will find new ways that it can have a positive affect your life.
